From March 18th, 2024, the Museo Picasso Málaga, in collaboration with the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (FABA), will be renewing its permanent collection for the seventh time. Entitled Pablo Picasso: Structures of Invention. The Unity of a Life’s Work, the exposition will offer an opportunity to see some 150 works, some of which have never been exhibited in Spain. The exhibition is curated by Michael FitzGerald, Kluger Family Professor of Art History at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut (USA), and director of the FABA Research Program (2021-2024).

Picasso’s creativity arose from two apparently opposing inspirations: innovation and retrospection, and the interplay of these two concepts defines the creative pathways that enabled him to weave together cubism, classicism, Surrealism and his other innovations into the unity of a life’s work. Throughout the exhibition, we offer opportunities for viewers to imagine the creative choices Picasso made, especially by combining or reconsidering styles he developed across his career."

Michael FitzGerald

The exhibition layout will be highlighted by 5 “focus exhibitions” created by the 5 scholars involved in the FABA Research Program. These will provide opportunities to delve deeper into the work of Pablo Picasso on themes as varied as the relationship of the artist’s work to African art, paintings on wooden panels, plaster sculptures, Picasso’s art during the Occupation of Paris during WWII, and the UNESCO mural.
