The Many Faces of Picasso's Late Work (Dialogue 2)
In 2023, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death and the 20th anniversary of the museum, two “Dialogue” proposals co-curated by the American art historian Michael FitzGerald and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (FABA), have been included into the permanent display of the Museo Picasso Málaga.
The many faces of Picasso's late work, the second "Dialogue", focuses on late works by Picasso, in connexion with The Echo of Picasso(October 3, 2023 - March 31, 2024), curated by Eric Troncy in the museum's temporary spaces
“Despite Picasso’s worldwide fame, his late paintings were widely criticized during his lifetime, and they remain among his most controversial works. In recent years, however, they have become admired as expressions of his remarkable artistic vitality late in life and have inspired current generations of young artists.
This exhibition focuses on one of Picasso’s most frequent subjects – the human face – to present the tremendous variety of styles he invented to capture diverse images of humanity and explore his mastery of the act of painting. Whether portraying the precise features of a wide range of elders, who sometimes suggest self-portraits, or the startlingly blank faces of a woman holding a child, Picasso’s paintings demonstrate the remarkable originality of conception and freedom of execution that define the culmination of his long career. »
