Picasso and Industrial Painting: Beyond the Limits of Oil Painting by Claire Guerin and Laura Resina
The present study aims to understand the material evolution of works created with industrial paints on different supports by Picasso between 1915 and 1972, as well as the causes of the deterioration observed in them.
The research was carried out on artworks belonging to the private collections of Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso (FABA) and the Museo Picasso Málaga between 1994 and 2010.
The approaches used to understand the aging process of the industrial paint layer were:
- Direct observation of Pablo Picasso’s works painted on different supports.
- The relationship between the artworks and the analysis of materials found in the “La Californie” studio.
- The history of deterioration caused by factors such as the handling and movement of works during temporary exhibitions, the environmental conditions of storage locations, conservation and restoration interventions, and the scientific analysis of materials.
